Chapter Sixteen

The question was, how were they supposed to get a message to the placktoids when no one knew where they were or how to reach them? Carrie and Dave had gone to the Commissioner’s office to draft a statement. While she was composing the message with Dave, Carrie was listening in to the Commissioner’s phone conversation with his technical team.

“I see. How long will that take to set up?” the Commissioner asked. “Right. Please arrange it as quickly as you can and let me know when it’s ready. We’ll broadcast immediately.” He hung up and turned to Carrie and Dave. “How is that statement coming along?”

“Nearly done,” Dave replied, frowning as he typed the closing sentence. “What do you think, Carrie?”

She read the whole message through again, including the part Dave had just added. “I like it. I think we’re being more than reasonable in the circumstances. If they don’t agree to this, they’ll only have themselves to blame for what happens next. Do we have an ETA on the Unity starships?”

Dave replied, “Errruorerrrrrh said tomorrow morning.”

“So how long do you think we should give the placktoids to comply?”

“I would advise not giving them very long,” said the Commissioner. “A drawn-out negotiation isn’t to our advantage in this scenario. We’ll be putting the placktoids under a direct threat, and the longer they have to give an answer, the more opportunity they have to organise a strong, decisive response. I would advise two hours as a maximum.”

“Two hours is plenty of time to do as we demand,” said Carrie. “They have gateways.”

“Right,” Dave said. “But how can we be sure they’ll even get the message?”

The Commissioner answered, “We’re going to broadcast the message on all television channels and radio stations simultaneously. My team said they can arrange it. The placktoids won’t fail to see the statement. The method isn’t ideal. I would prefer that the general public were not aware of what we’re doing. I don’t want to cause any panic. However, I believe we have to risk some alarm at this stage. We have the permission of the Deputy Prime Minister, who is informing the heads of the armed services as we speak so they can prepare to respond to incidences of civil unrest. I assume you’ve left out any references to aliens or planets in your message, as we discussed?”

Carrie nodded. What they were about to do might be the turning point in the placktoid invasion. She only hoped that their plan would work. They had Errruorerrrrrhch’s approval, which added to her confidence.

The Commissioner’s telephone rang. He answered it. “All set? Good. We’ll come down.”

The three of them went downstairs to the room reserved for press conferences. As they went into the room, the Commissioner said, “Which one of you is going to read the statement?”

“I thought you were going to read it,” said Carrie.

“As I understand it,” said the Inspector, “the placktoids are familiar with both of you. I believe they may be more willing to comply when they’re faced with individuals who have defeated them in the past.
